2019 was an excellent year for the world of golf, with newbies to the professional golf scene quickly rising the ranks and veterans proving they’ve still got what it takes to compete! This year looks to be another exciting one for the sport, with plenty of up-and-comers vying to prove their worth, and older players looking to defend titles and break records. At The Insurance Emporium, we’re looking forward to the year of golf ahead, so without further ado, here are our golfers to watch in 2020!
Instead of starting this list with an upcoming golfing star, we’re beginning with the biggest name, and one of the biggest comebacks, in golfing history! After overcoming countless injuries, Tiger Woods managed to play injury-free in 2018. He wasn’t lucky enough to maintain that record last year, but his 82nd win at the Zozo Championship in Japan was enough to put him on par with Sam Snead for most PGA Tour wins. This year, Tiger’s looking for at least one more PGA win to cement his position at the top.
In 2017, when then-14-year-old Atthaya Thitkul won the Ladies European Thailand Championship, she was the youngest golfer ever to win a professional event. Two years later, in 2019, Thitkul proved she wasn’t a one hit wonder by winning the same event again! As the world’s top women’s amateur golfer, many expect 2020 to be the year Atthaya Thitkul goes pro.
Young Norwegian golfer Viktor Hovland has broken into the professional scene with a strong start in 2019. He was the first ever Norwegian to play at The Masters, and even made the final cut. 19 consecutive PGA Tour rounds with scores in the 60s also saw the young golfer set a new record in his first professional year! Hovland’s personality matches his talent, too. His infectious smile and friendly demeanour are sure to make him a star in the coming years!
Coming into 2019, Scottie Scheffler was ranked outside of the world’s top 1,500 golfers. With a lot of hard work and dedication, he ended it within the top 100! At just 23 years old, last year was fantastic for Scheffler, as he proved his worth with two wins on the Korn Ferry Tour to gain PGA exempt status. With no real weaknesses to his game, it’ll be interesting to see whether Scottie Scheffler can continue his rise in 2020!
22-year-old Collin Morikawa earned his PGA Tour card for 2020 just six weeks after his Tour debut! Boasting three top five finishes in his first six tournaments, the young American had an incredible start to his professional career, punctuated by a victory at the Barracuda Championship. If his performance last year was anything to go by, Collin Morikawa’s career will be one to watch!
It’s been six years since Rory McIlroy last won a major, at the PGA Championship 2014 in Valhalla. Could 2020 be the year he claims his fifth major win? His performances last year ranged from abysmal, with a horrific opening round at Royal Portrush, to incredible, with a range of top 10 finishes and some wins. He even won the biggest prize in the history of professional golf, claiming $15million at the FedEx Cup! If he can carry that momentum forward, 2020 could be the year that Rory McIlroy wins his fifth major. He’s already reclaimed his world number one spot!
Tommy Fleetwood has been a serious contender for majors since 2017, securing three top-five finishes in the last three years! At just 29, Fleetwood still has plenty of years ahead of him to raise the bar and take his first major. But with fierce competition ahead and close calls adding up, he’ll have to claim a victory soon, before he becomes known as the golfer who very nearly won a major!
British golfer Charley Hull first picked up a club at just two years old! She went on to become the youngest golfer to play in the Solheim Cup aged 17, and narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2016 Olympics. She’s enjoyed success since then too, taking top cuts in the majority of events, several top-ten finishes and was a runner-up at the season-finale of the CME Group Tour Championship last year. Look out for the name Charley Hull bringing home a medal in Tokyo!
